Fluorescent and Luminescent Probes for Biological Activity $139 The use of fluorescent and luminescent probes to measure biological function has increased dramatically since publication of the First Edition due to their improved speed, safety, and power of analytical approach. This eagerly awaited Second Edition, also edited by Bill Mason, contains 19 new chapters and over two thirds new material, and is a must for all life scientists using optical probes. The contents include discussion of new optical methodologies for detection of proteins, DNA and other molecules, as well as probes for ions, receptors, cellular components, and gene expression. Emerging and advanced technologies for probe detection such as confocal laser scanning microscopy are also covered. This book will be essential for those embarking on work in the field or using new methods to enhance their research. TOPICS COVERED: * Single and multiphoton confocal microscopy * Applications of green fluorescent protein and chemiluminescent reporters to gene expression studies * Applications of new optical probes for imaging proteins in gels * Probes and detection technologies for imaging membrane potential in live cells * Use of optical probes to detect microorganisms * Raman and confocal raman microspectroscopy * Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy * Digital CCD cameras and their application in biological microscopy |

CMOSMems Probes. by Liu, Jingwei [Paperback] $115.71 This thesis reports on the analysis, modeling, design, fabrication and characterization of complementary metaloxidesemiconductor microelectromechanical systems (CMOS MEMS) electrothermal probes with conductive tips and embedded piezoresistive and capacitive sensors. The probes are envisioned for use to mechanically address and pass current to reconfigure phase change via switches which are embedded in future radio frequency integrated circuits. Reliable electrical contacts are required for the probes to access and pass the relatively large current pulses (sim;10 mA) required to reconfigure the phase change vias. Additionally, sensing and tracking mechanisms are needed to detect the relative vertical position of the probes and the mechanical contact of the probes with respect to the reconfigurable IC substrate. CMOS MEMS probes with lever structures that achieve a pushup electrothermal actuation up to 10 mum and force up to 20 muN with a drive power of approximately 10 mW are demonstrated. When actuation power is off the probes are disengaged. Multiple piezoresistive sensors are embedded into the probe flexure to achieve a muNscale force resolution using dc detection with resistive temperature sensing to compensate for heating from actuation. A platinum metallization process is developed that is compatible with the rest of the CMOS MEMS flow. The measured contact resistances are estimated to be 10 O or less. Electromigration in the probe interconnect is increased due to the CMOSMEMS Probes elevated temperature in the released beams. However, the probes are able to pass current pulses of 10 mA reliably. Molecules in Astrophysics: Probes and Processes $210.3 Molecules are found in a large variety of astronomical environments, ranging from comets in the solar system to galaxies at high redshift. This book brings together astronomers, physicists and chemists to discussthe use of molecules as probes of astrophysical parameters, explore their role in the evolution of astronomical objects, and study the basic chemical processes that occur in space. The enormous progress in observationaltechniques is illustrated by studies of the physics and chemistry on scales comparable to the protosolar nebulae around high and lowmass forming stars and planetary systems. Elegant new experimental techniques for themeasurement of gasphase reactions at low temperatures, the analysis of spectra, and the investigation of surface adsorbates on interplanetary dust particles and meteorites are presented; the importance of accurate quantumchemical calculations is emphasized. Present knowledge of the composition of dust grains and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is summarized. Other topics include models and observations of jets and outflows, photon andXraydominated regions, masers in and outside our galaxy, the comet D/ShoemakerLevy collision with Jupiter, the envelopes and photospheres of latetype stars including brown dwarfs, diffuse and translucent clouds, andexternal galaxies ranging from the nearby Magellanic Clouds to distant quasar absorption line systems and starburst galaxies at the edge of the Universe. Russian Space Probes (Paperback) $77.67 Brian Harvey recounts for the first time the definitive history of scientific Russian space probes and the knowledge they acquired of the Earth, its environment, the Moon, Mars and Venus. He examines what Russian Space Science has actually achieved in furthering our knowledge of the Solar System, focusing on the instrumentation and scientific objectives and outcomes, the information gained and lessons learnt. Boxes and charts are used extensively in order to convey in an easily understandable manner for the non-scientific reader the problems and issues addressed and solved by Soviet space science. The book opens with the story of early space science in Russia, which started when the first Russian rockets were fired into the high atmosphere from Kapustin Yar in the late 1940s. Instruments were carried to measure and map the atmosphere and later rockets carried dogs to test their reactions to weightlessness. In order to beat America into Earth orbit, two simpler satellites than originally planned were launched, Sputnik and Sputnik 2, which provided some initial information on atmospheric density, while the following Sputnik 3 carried twelve instruments to measure radiation belts, solar radiation, the density of the atmosphere and the Earth`s magnetic field. The author recounts how, by the 1960s, the Soviet Union had developed a program of investigation of near-Earth space using satellites within the Cosmos program, in particular the DS (Dnepropetrovsky Sputnik), small satellites developed to investigate meteoroids, radiation, the magnetic fields, the upper atmosphere, solar activity, ionosphere, charged particles, cosmic rays and geophysics. Brian Harvey then gives the scientific results from Russian lunar exploration, starting with the discovery of the solar wind by the First Cosmic Ship and the initial mapping of the lunar far side by the Automatic Interplanetary Station. He describes Luna 10, which made the first full study of the lunar environment, Luna 16 which b |
