Approximate Dynamic Programming $144.98 In spite of considerable research efforts, curse of dimensionality which affects the scalability of approximate dynamic programming (ADP) models still remains a challenge. This work advances the stateoftheart in the field of stochastic dynamic programming methods through the innovative integration of a diffusion wavelet based value function approximation method with ADP. The innovation lies in this integration that exploits the structure of the problem to achieve computational feasibility. The research method is tested on the problem of taxiout time estimation of aircraft to establish a proof of concept. The sequential predictions of taxiout time obtained in realtime for departing aircraft provide shared situational awareness to benefit airport operations planning. The outcomes of this work provide a generic methodology for sequential decision making under uncertainty in large scale applications by uniting concepts from signal processing, statistics, stochastic processes, and artificial intelligence, which may provide solutions for future automated decision making in large scale complex applications in other engineering domains. Focusrite Octopre Mkii Dynamic $699.99 The Focusrite OctoPre MkII Dynamic is a feature-rich expansion upgrade for any digital audio workstation. With 8 channels of Focusrite microphone pre-amplification, 8 VCA-based Red 3-derived compressors and built-in 24-bit / 96 kHz digital inputs and outputs, the OctoPre MkII is equally ideal as an expansion for any analogue or digital console, or for a hard disk recorder. The OctoPre MkII Dynamic's digital inputs and outputs let you make the most of often-neglected ADAT I/Oideal for expanding the number of mic-pre inputs on your interface or for providing analogue monitoring from any digital ADAT feed. With this entire package fitting into a single 1U chassis complementing Focusrite's Saffire PRO range, and all controls adjustable from the front fascia, OctoPre MkII Dynamic sets the standard for modern, compact, multi-channel recording expansions.Saffire Mic Pre Focusrite has, over the past two decades, built a reputation as the market leader for high quality recording equipment, with its mic pre technology as the cornerstone of that enviable reputation. The original ISA mic pre, as featured in the early Focusrite Fort console, is still used by many of the industry's greatest producers and has contributed to the sound of countless hit records. Today, Focusrite design equipment for a far greater audience, from professionals to amateur enthusiasts, all with varying budgets. As with the Classic ISA mic pre used in both the ISA and Red ranges, the Saffire mic pre found in the OctoPre MkII Dynamic is designed to the highest possible standards. It upholds the same wide bandwidth philosophy featured in the original fort console, back in 1989. As with the Classic ISA mic pre, the Saffire mic pre design features custom components which have undergone an intense testing and qualification process. With the facts and figures in, Focusrite designs then have to pass the essential listening stage. Any design can measure well on the test bench but only a great design can be qualified in the studio. The FET-based Saffire mic pre design is no exception. It delivers clarity without colouration and exhibits the signature transparency for which Focusrite have become famous. With the high channel count interfaces (Saffire PRO 40 and Liquid Saffire 56) and both the OctoPre MkII and OctoPre MkII Dynamic, the Saffire pre-amp has been optimized for drums. The theoretical maximum level of a microphone was calculated, and the mic pre was adjusted with this in mind so as not to clip with this level present, set to minimum gain. As a result, the mic pre won't clip, even with a high output level mic right up close to a snare drum (the mic input will accept signal levels up to +16dBU from a microphone). Compression The Compressors featured in OctoPre MkII Dynamic are a new VCA-based, feed-forward design, derived from the celebrated Focusrite Red 3. With just a single dial, these eight 'recording' compressors allow you to get to the desired amount of compression for each channel |

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization $202.33 Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a versatile technique relying on spinbearing nuclei. Since its discovery more than 60 years ago, NMR and related techniques have become indispensable tools with innumerable applications in physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. One of the main obstacles in NMR is its notorious lack of sensitivity, which is due to the minuscule energy splitting of the nuclear spins at room temperature. Appropriately, the inherent low polarization allows for a theoretical sensitivity enhancement of more than 10,000. The NMR signal enhancement of protons which can be achieved by means of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) is approximately 660. In this book, different hardware aspects and polarizing agents for DNP were studied. The results show the potential of DNP, especially at a magnetic field of B=0.35 T, when it comes to the polarization of nuclei with a very low magnetogyric ratio which should result in many new applications. These presented components and designs could be the foundation to open up the application of a mobile DNP polarizer for medical applications. Signal and Noise (Paperback) $43.79 Mainstream media and film theory are based on the ways that media technologies operate in Europe and the United States. In this groundbreaking work, Brian Larkin provides a history and ethnography of media in Nigeria, asking what media theory looks like when Nigeria rather than a European nation or the United States is taken as the starting point. Concentrating on the Muslim city of Kano in the north of Nigeria, Larkin charts how the material qualities of technologies and the cultural ambitions they represent feed into the everyday experiences of urban Nigeria. Media technologies were introduced to Nigeria by colonial regimes as part of an attempt to shape political subjects and create modern, urban Africans. Larkin considers the introduction of media along with electric plants and railroads as part of the wider infrastructural project of colonial and postcolonial urbanism. Focusing on radio networks, mobile cinema units, and the building of cinema theaters, he argues that what media come to be in Kano is the outcome of technology’s encounter with the social formations of northern Nigeria and with norms shaped by colonialism, postcolonial nationalism, and Islam. Larkin examines how media technologies produce the modes of leisure and cultural forms of urban Africa by analyzing the circulation of Hindi films to Muslim Nigeria, the leisure practices of Hausa cinemagoers in Kano, and the dynamic emergence of Nigerian video films. His analysis highlights the diverse, unexpected media forms and practices that thrive in urban Africa. Signal and Noise brings anthropology and media together in an original analysis of media’s place in urban life. |

Acoustic Ranging in a Dynamic, Multipath Environment. $115.71 An acoustic experiment was carried out in October 2007 in Portsmouth Harbor, New Hampshire, to measure the effects of environmental variability on acoustic range measurements over a distance of 948 meters. A fixed source and receiver measured the oneway travel time and signal level fluctuations over four days. Wind, sound speed, tidal data, and current speed predictions were used to assess their effects on the acoustic measurements. The environmental data collected during this experiment showed variability at many scales, both temporally and spatially throughout the harbor. The acoustic data revealed the presence of multipath arrivals, with 23 strong arrivals for each transmitted ping. A simple geometric model was used, along with raytracing, to describe fluctuations in arrival time and signal level. Acoustic travel times between a fixed source and receiver were converted to range measurements and compared with GPSderived ranges. This study provides a basis for understanding the capabilities and limitations of acoustic travel time measurements in Portsmouth Harbor, or similar dynamic multipath environments. Results showed an overall spread in range of between five and eight meters over the total range of 948 meters, with greater precision and accuracy possible with additional processing. Distributed-Order Dynamic Systems $39.95 Distributed-order differential equations, a generalization of fractional calculus, are of increasing importance in many fields of science and engineering from the behaviour of complex dielectric media to the modelling of nonlinear systems. This Brief will broaden the toolbox available to researchers interested in modeling, analysis, control and filtering. It contains contextual material outlining the progression from integer-order, through fractional-order to distributed-order systems. Stability issues are addressed with graphical and numerical results highlighting the fundamental differences between constant-, integer-, and distributed-order treatments. The power of the distributed-order model is demonstrated with work on the stability of noncommensurate-order linear time-invariant systems. Generic applications of the distributed-order operator follow: signal processing and viscoelastic damping of a mass--spring set up. A new general approach to discretization of distributed-order derivatives and integrals is described. The Brief is rounded out with a consideration of likely future research and applications and with a number of MATLAB(R) codes to reduce repetitive coding tasks and encourage new workers in distributed-order systems. |
